aware that every special request requires one to two weeks
extra.
We

Remembering
the Poor
Art
from recycled materials is hot right now, and as I make
my so-called living by making art from junk, I want to
remember and acknowledge those who have even less than
I. Recycled art originally springs from re-use of materials
by those who have no choice about what to use. Third world
countries, especially Africa, produce much of our highest
quality recycled art by using their ancient arts and crafts
techniques. They put a high value on scrap as it is all
they have access to.
Although
I’m happy that people are recycling, I don’t
want art from recycled materials to become sanitized and
gentrified. Most of my customers are poor folk like me.
May my work always be accessible to those of lower income!
May I never forget that I came to this work through my
own poverty, and may I always be generous with my gifts
back to others.
Thank
you to the impoverished folk who have given me and other
artists inspiration for using bottlecaps and other “trash”
materials. Let’s reclaim our materials without forgetting
their source.
To
me, making art from trash is a metaphor for the journey
I’ve taken through my struggles, transforming my
sense of self-worth from junk into art.
